What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization (or SEO for short)

SEO is the process of optimizing a website for search engines.

Let’s face it, if a search engine like Google or Bing can’t find your site, then neither can users.

There are 4 ways people search on Google (and other search engines). Back n the day when Yahoo was the most popular search engine. All websites in the Yahoo database were manually entered in by staff.

Then along came Google. They created a formula (or algorithm) that uses elements of a website to rank it higher. The higher the rank, the more clickable the link becomes.

There are over 200 factors in Google’s Algorithm … and the algorithm is always changing. But it is not changing for the sake of change.

The algorithm changes because of other factors. Factors such as:

  • Technology
    • Before smartphones there was no need for mobile-friendly websites.
    • Voice search was not a factor until recenlty. People now use more words when voice-searching than when they type-search
  • Humans
    • When the online world came to be, we weren’t that good at typing
    • There are no more sites online than ever so being found on a search is even more difficult
  • Data
    • Because of Google Analytics, there is just so much information gathered that it shows what users are doing and looking for.

Who Gets the Clicks?

If Google can’t find your website who can?

How do you expect your customers to find you

Yes, if Google your business name, you will probably be in the number one spot. If not … ouch!

What happens when you search the service you provide or a product you sell?

  • Are you still number 1?
  • Are you still on the first page of Google?
  • Are you on the top half of page one?

Which sites get the most clicks from users?

In today’s world, if your website is not listed the top half (or higher) of Google’s results, your site won’t be clicked on very often. Look at the data of Who Gets The Clicks.

Think about it, if a user is searching for, say a “photographer”. If there are 5 photographers listed first, why would the user scroll down past those 5 photographers to click your site at 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10?

There are at least 200 factors
in Google’s Algorithm.

Page Speed, Site Content, User Experience, On Page SEO, Off Page SEO, Mobile Friendly are just a few of the 200+ factors in Google’s Algorithm.

Google is the #1 search engine out there and they want to keep it that way. They have a set of rules to play by and if you want to be indexed by them, you have to follow them. Their exact algorithm is a secret, but there are factors that are obvious and that need to be followed.

Why even have a website
if you are not going to maintain it?

Google and your site users want information. If you are not going to update your products, services, staff, hours and other information, don’t expect Google to come back and “crawl” your site looking for new information, and don’t expect your customers (current or potential) to visit often either.

Would you hire a new employee and stick them in a cubical only to never train them, update them? So why is it ok to do this to the one employee that works for you 24/7?
